Last for 2010
THE final weekend of cricket before the Christmas break was played over the weekend, with clubs looking to end the calendar year on a high note.
Although Friday’s rain caused some games to be abandoned, there was still plenty of quality matches played around the grounds, with the Glendon Club posting wins in all grades for the first time this season.
FIRST GRADE
In the Imperial Hotel First Grade competition, the game between Creeks and PCH was declared washed out, with the Howe Park wicket too wet.
That meant the only game played in first grade was between JPC and Glendon at Cook 3, with JPC still riding high over last week’s win against Heights, and Glendon looking to make amends for their season so far. JPC won the toss and sent Glendon into bat, which looked the right decision when openers Patrick Denniss and Alex Thrift were dismissed cheaply and the score 2/12. However a decent mid order revival, spearheaded by Captain Phil Holz on 41, saw Glendon post a respectable and competitive 165. Brad Young, in career form, took 3/16 to be the best of the JPC bowlers for the second week running, and may come under scrutiny from anti-doping agencies after a mind-boggling form turnaround.
JPC went into bat with Rod Luxford looking to regain his title of “The headliner, The Showstopper, The Main Event” and continue last week’s blistering form. Unfortunately, Scott Griffiths soon halted any visions of a repeat performance, getting a genuine edge and dismissing the veteran superstar for a duck. It was left up to Ryan Guihot, making his return after a notable absence, to steer the Colts towards the target. He was dismissed for 53 and although the tail wagged momentarily thanks to Dan Murphy’s 24, JPC was dismissed 7 runs short for 158. Scott Griffiths (4/46) and Jacob Herbert (3/19) were the pick of the bowlers. This gave Glendon an early Christmas present with their first win of the season, and JPC left to regroup over the Yuletide.
