Carlos Tevez withdraws Manchester City transfer request

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has withdrawn his transfer request after talks with the club.

The 26-year-old Argentine, who joined City in July 2009, said earlier this month that he wanted to leave after falling out with club officials.

But City said in a statement on Monday that Tevez has expressed his commitment to the club and will stay at Eastlands.

"Carlos and the club are keen to focus on the opportunities ahead and his contract remains unchanged," it said.

Manager Roberto Mancini added: "Carlos is a world-class player whose contribution since he joined the club has been invaluable.

"I am pleased that we are now able to focus on pure football matters and to be able to look forward to Carlos continuing to play a significant role in the club's progress."

City made Tevez the Premier League's best-paid player when he controversially moved to Eastlands from local rivals Manchester United on a five-year deal.

He made an instant impact, scoring 29 goals in his first campaign, and was made team captain by Mancini ahead of this season.

Despite scoring 10 times in 18 appearances so far this term, there had been reports of Tevez falling out with Mancini while he has also admitted to being homesick with his estranged wife and two young children living in Argentina.

His unhappiness came to a head on 12 December when he handed in a written transfer request and claimed his relations with "certain executives" at City had "broken down beyond repair".

City, in turn, criticised Tevez's long-time adviser Kia Joorabchian, describing his actions in relation to Tevez's situation as "disappointing".

Despite the conflict seemingly becoming increasingly acrimonious, Mancini expressed his hope that Tevez would stay, while City's football administrator Brian Marwood said he expected the player to see out his contract, which runs to July 2014.

It seems Tevez, who always insisted he would remain available for selection, has now resolved his issues - for the time being at least.

He is now expected to play in the Premier League home match against Everton on Monday, potentially still as captain. City could go top if they win.

Lunar Eclipse Total December 2010

This eclipse is supposed to be one of the best ever. What makes this years’ eclipse so special is the fact that the moon will be very high in the sky and so the eclipse will be seen from coast to coast. (And as Trish of Love, Laughter and Insanity points out in a comment below, it is the first total lunar eclipse to occur during the Winter Solstice since 1378!)
Lunar eclipses always occur at full moon when the moon is behind the Earth from the sun and the Earth’s shadow is cast upon the moon. Therefore, both lunar and solar eclipses can only occur when the Earth, Sun and Moon are directly aligned.

Why Will the Moon Look Copper?

Theoretically, the moon should disappear from sight during totality, since it is completely in the Earth’s shadow. But in this eclipse, the moon will become a gorgeous copper color because of the Earth’s atmosphere. (If the Earth had no atmosphere, the moon would be completely dark during an eclipse. The red coloring arises because some sunlight still reaches the moon. Only direct sunlight is blocked. However, for the light that does manage to reach the moon, it must pass through a long and dense layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, where it is scattered. Shorter wavelengths are more likely to be scattered by the small particles, and so by the time the light has passed through the atmosphere, the longer wavelengths dominate. This resulting light we perceive as red.)

Inside of Metrodome Collapse video

MINNEAPOLIS - A storm that spanned parts of eight states continued to dump heavy snow in Minnesota Saturday collapsed the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The Vikings Giants game is rescheduled for Monday night Ford Field in Detroit. The game will be televised on FOX 9 at 6:20 CST p.m. Monday.

The possibility of an open-air night game at TCF Bank stadium was considered, but the Giants did not travel with winter weather gear to play in, reported FOX 9 News Director Bill Dallman. TCF Bank was essentially shut down for the winter. It would need up to five days to be prepared for a game.

Stadium Failure

Snow removal workers were clearing snow from the dome roof overnight, but needed to be called down late Saturday night due to safety concerns.

The roof deflated due to snow accumulation around 5 a.m. Sunday. Crews found at least three Teflon roof panels have sustained some damage.

Emergency repair crews of experts are en route to Minneapolis from various locations around the U.S.

Vikings, Giants and NFL officials are now in discussions about what to do in order to maintain options to keep games on schedule and in order.

Red Sox couldn’t reach a deal with A. Gonzalez

According to Sports Illustrated Jon Heyman the Red Sox could not reach to a deal with Adrian Gonzalez.

Earlier today we learned that Gonzalez and the Red Sox reached an impasse in the negotiations and the trade might not happen, although Heyman guesses that the trade might still happen despite alleged difference in years last night.

“All I can say is, it was very disappointing it could not work out. We’re very busy at this point,” said John Boggs- Gonzalez agent (via Tom Krasovic of FanHouse.com).

FOXSport’s Ken Rosenthal says that the teams can still negotiate a trade despite the negotiation window being closed. He adds that they are confident of making a deal, although it’s hard to give up to much for a one year guy.

Yesterday, The Boston Red Sox and the San Diego Padres agreed on a deal that will send Gonzalez to Boston in exchange for Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo and Reymond Fuentes.

NFL will not suspend Andre Johnson

Texans receiver Andre Johnson has reportedly dodged a bullet from the league office, as the NFL has decided not to suspend Johnson for punching Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan on Sunday.

Mark Berman of FOX 26 Sports is reporting that Johnson will be fined but not suspended.

That means Johnson will play Thursday night against the Eagles in a big game for the Texans, who are 5-6 and one game behind the Jaguars and Colts in the AFC South. Having to face Johnson could be trouble for the Eagles, whose pass defense struggled as they fell to 7-4 in a loss to the Bears Sunday.

There’s no word on the amount of Johnson’s fine or on the league’s discipline for Finnegan.

Bono And The Edge Praise Spider-Man Musical

After countless setbacks, controversies, and casting changes, "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" premiered on Broadway this weekend for preview audiences. And though Spidey's debut on Broadway wasn't exactly spectacular, that doesn't mean U2 bandmates Bono and The Edge have anything but high praise for the mesh of comics and rock music found in "Turn Off The Dark."

In an interview conducted last week, the musicians elaborated on the connections between rock music and graphic novels, and the various ways they're describing the ambitious collaboration between themselves and "Turn Off The Dark" director Julie Taymor.

"There's always been a thing with punk rock bands and comics," Bono told MTV News. "It's always been there. Even The Ramones, who are also from Queens like Peter Parker and Mary Jane, they covered the theme to Spider-Man."

"It goes all through not just rock and roll culture, [but] all through modern art," he continued. "You see it in Roy Lichtenstein's work, the pop artists' work, they all sample from comics."

As for this particular piece of pop art, Bono volunteered the description he's using when he tells people about the show.

"[The show] is like a graphic novel, but a three-dimensional one," he said. "I'm calling it a pop-up, pop-art opera... because I'm pretentious. Julie's calling it what?"

"I think she's calling it a rock-and-roll circus drama," said The Edge.

"We don't really know what to call it, because there are so many aspects to it," he explained. "A great night out. I think that's what it is."

In the end, the pair agreed that "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" is an amalgam of just about everything — and something that they're hoping audiences have never seen before.

"It is elements of rock and roll, it's elements of circus, it's elements of opera and musical theater," said The Edge. "It is so many different things, and when we started the process, we promised we'd do something that hasn't been done before. And I think we've managed to do that."

Keep it locked to Splash Page for more "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" news, interviews, and updates as the show begins its run on Broadway.

eorge Harrison Remembered Favorite Cover Vers. of His Songs

As a member of the Beatles, George Harrison was lucky to get a couple of songs on each album. Yet, despite being overshadowed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Harrison wrote some of the band's most endearing tunes. Once the Beatles split, Harrison's explosion of solo hits -- many written while with the Beatles -- suggested that the two-song limit might have held him back. Through the years, a slew of artists have recorded Harrison's songs, so for the ninth anniversary of his passing on Nov. 29, we present 10 of our favorite Harrison covers.
    'While My Guitar Gently Weeps,'

    Santana
This Beatles song, performed with the aid of Eric Clapton on lead guitar, has been covered by scores of artists, from Phish and the Jeff Healey Band to ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro. But Santana's 2010 version combines his Latin influences with the folk and soul touch of India.Arie and the classical imprint of cellist Yo Yo Ma. Harrison's widow, Olivia, told guitarist Carlos Santana that George would be proud of this version.

    'Long, Long, Long,' Jim James
In the days immediately following Harrison's death, My Morning Jacket's front man Jim James recorded several Harrison classics, including this sleepy 'White Album' waltz. Performed in the dreamy, echo-y manner that characterized earlier MMJ songs, this cover was one of six Harrison songs included in 'Tribute To,' a 2009 EP James put out under the transparently pseudonymous Yim Yames.

    'Something,' Frank Sinatra
Through the 1950s, Sinatra often criticized rock music, once telling Western World magazine it was "sung, played and written for the most part by cretinous goons. It manages to be the martial music of every sideburned delinquent on the face of the earth." Apparently, he got over it, later calling this Beatles tune "one of the best love songs, I believe, to be written in 50 or 100 years." Elvis Presley -- the man Sinatra often referred to in his rock criticisms -- would also perform 'Something,' as would James Brown, Joe Cocker, Julio Iglesias, Tony Bennett and dozens of others.

'Here Comes the Sun,' Richie Havens
Havens earned his fame for creating the song 'Freedom' on the spot before tens of thousands of fans at Woodstock. Despite that incredible boost -- his intense performance was captured in the 'Woodstock' movie -- Havens would score only one hit single, a 1970 cover of this optimistic Harrison Beatles tune. Using his long thumb to barre chords on an open-tuned acoustic guitar, his unique interpretation is both somber and hopeful with a spiritual flavoring.

'All Things Must Pass,' Billy Preston
Having met the Beatles while on tour with Little Richard in the mid-'60s, this Houston-born keyboardist would contribute to several of their songs, becoming the only non-Beatle to receive credit on a Beatles record ('Get Back': "The Beatles with Billy Preston"). Even before Harrison released his jam-packed 'All Things Must Pass' solo album, Preston put out this soulful, light rock cover -- originally written while Harrison was still with the Beatles -- for his 1970 album 'Encouraging Words.'

'Try Some, Buy Some,' David Bowie
While Bowie had a direct line to the Beatles -- he performed 'Fame' with John Lennon -- he actually recorded this Harrison solo song as a Ronnie Spector cover. Spector released her version of 'Try Some, Buy Some' in 1971, two years before it would appear on Harrison's 'Living in the Material World' album. Bowie, a big Spector fan, said he was channeling Spector when he recorded this lush, Wall of Sound cover for his 2003 album 'Reality.'

    'Beware of Darkness,' Leon Russell
After working as a nightclub piano player at age 14, Russell became an elite session pianist who has worked for Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, the Rolling Stones, the Byrds and several others. So by the time he was a solo act, he had no problem getting contributions from people like Harrison, Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood. He performed this song as a duet with Harrison at the 1971 'Concert for Bangladesh' and released his faithful cover that same year.
    Leon Russell

    Jan Persson, Redferns
    'Taxman,' Junior Parker
Parker had serious blues cred, having performed with Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, Bobby Bland and B.B. King. But he was also versatile, as he proved in this soulful Beatles cover, from 1971. Featuring funky guitar riffs, laid-back -- at times talking -- vocals and a mellow groove, this cover takes the edge off of tax day.

    'Give Me Love,' Dave Davies
When the Kinks opened for the Beatles, John Lennon let it be known that as the support band they were merely there to keep the crowd occupied until the headliners hit the stage. But Davies, the Kinks lead guitarist, apparently didn't hold a grudge against the Fab Four, recording this Harrison cover for 'Songs From the Material World: A Tribute to George Harrison' in 2003. Though not particularly a fan of covers, Davies provides a faithful one here -- he made an exception due to Harrison's "shining spirituality" -- duplicating Harrison's trademark guitar fills.
    Dave Davies

    Ebet Roberts, Redferns
    'My Sweet Lord,' Nina Simone
Known more for her jazzy cover of 'Here Comes the Sun,' Simone's 1972 single, recorded live, presents Harrison's solo effort as a soul revival, complete with a robust gospel choir. The High Priestess of Soul, known for her unique interpretation of other artists' works, also recorded an impressive version of Harrison's 'Isn't It a Pity,' slowing down the tempo to bring focus to her calming vocals.
